Pediatric Chronic Idiopathic Constipation: A Direct Comparison of Polyethylene Glycol Powder and Polyethylene Glycol 40% Syrup

Abstract

Constipation is a frequent gastrointestinal problem in children and may have serious consequences if left untreated.
This research set out to see whether polyethylene glycol powder was as effective as polyethylene glycol 40% syrup
in relieving constipation.
Methods This research used a nonrandomized, semi-experimental design. Eighty patients with constipation were
recruited from the Imam Ali (PBUH) Clinic in Shahrekord and randomly split into two groups of 40. Simple
sampling has been used to identify cases of functional constipation in children less than 15 every year since 2015.
For two months, Group 1 was given polyethylene glycol powder, while Group 2 was given polyethylene glycol
40% syrup. Defecation frequency, stool consistency, discomfort during defecation, blood in the stool, and stool
incontinence were all recorded over the course of therapy at five separate 2-week interval examinations. SPSS24
was used to do the analysis on the data.
When comparing patients' total status before and after intervention, we find that 28 (0.70%) polyethylene glycol
powder patients and 36 (0.90%) syrup patients were assessed as having a weak level of health before treatment, but
that after treatment, 35 (87.5%) polyethylene glycol powder patients and 37 (92%) syrup patients were assessed as
having a high level of health.
In sum, the data showed that PEG powder and syrup had comparable therapeutic effectiveness . In contrast to its
powder form, PEG syrup has a nice flavor and is simple to use, so it may be utilized instead.
